However, as wonderful as Buddy was, he had one issue that his owner (me) needed to resolve. The issue was our stairway which was difficult to maintain, because of Buddy's shedding. The wooden stair treads were stained a chestnut color a few years ago. But the dark stain showed Buddy's fur that is left with each passage up and down the stairs.
While many would install a wool runner or carpet the stairs, I decided to install a runner made of polypropylene. (Many indoor-outdoor carpets are made of polypropylene.) But first, I had the stairs lightly sanded and then painted white. Both treads and risers were primed and painted with a Benjamin Moore paint.
Once the stairs were painted, we installed the runner that we purchased from Lowe's. I had my doubts about the feasability of the runner keeping up with the constant use from Buddy, two homeowners and two cats.
But it's been a few months now, and except for weekly vacuuming, I have to say I love the runner for its durability and how it hides fur and dust. It's also safer for both homeowners and dogs as well.
In the end, although it took a few weeks to complete, the project transformed an unsightly area into a beautiful passageway for everyone at Buddy's home.
